Principal®

Pros

Easy, consolidated account management lets you view retirement, investment, and insurance accounts in one place, monitor balances and transaction history, download statements securely, and set up contributions or transfers from the mobile app. Centralized visibility and customizable alerts simplify oversight, reduce time hopping between platforms, and speed decision-making.

Built-in planning tools and personalized insights help users model retirement scenarios, estimate savings needs, and track progress toward goals. Interactive calculators, tailored recommendations, easy-to-read performance reports, asset-allocation guidance, and tax-efficient suggestions translate complex data into clear action items, enabling smarter investment choices and confidence in long-term financial planning.

Robust security features — including biometric login, multi-factor authentication, fraud monitoring, and industry-standard encryption — protect sensitive information while offering fast access. Real-time alerts, secure messaging with advisors, seamless e-signature and electronic document delivery, and responsive in-app support make transactions and communication efficient and worry-free for everyday account management and complex transactions alike.

Cons

Limited investment choices and advanced trading tools. Principal® focuses on retirement and insurance products, so self-directed investors may find fewer alternative investments, limited research tools, and less sophisticated trading features than full-service brokerages. That can constrain customization and active portfolio management for experienced investors seeking advanced strategies.

App usability and performance can be inconsistent. Some users report slow load times, occasional glitches during peak hours, and a navigation layout that feels cluttered or unintuitive. Critical functions like account transfers or statement downloads sometimes require the desktop site, reducing convenience for users who rely primarily on mobile access.

Customer support responsiveness and third-party integrations are limited. While Principal® provides standard support channels, users may face longer wait times for complex issues and less personalized financial planning through the app. Integration with popular budgeting or investment aggregation tools is narrower than fintech competitors, complicating consolidated financial management.
