Pro
1. Early Warning: MyShake app provides users with early earthquake warnings, allowing them to take cover or evacuate before shaking starts, potentially reducing injury and saving lives.
2. Community Engagement: Users contribute data by allowing the app to record shaking on their phones, enhancing earthquake detection and research through citizen science.
3. Personal Safety: The app offers safety tips and preparedness information, helping users plan and prepare for earthquakes, which can increase individual and community resilience.
Con
1. Limited Geographical Coverage: MyShake relies on network and smartphone density, resulting in less reliable performance in rural or less-developed regions with fewer users and weaker technological infrastructures.
2. Dependence on User Participation: Accurate detection and notifications require active user engagement. If insufficient users install and run the app, the system's effectiveness diminishes.
3. False Alarms and Sensitivity: The application may generate false positives due to non-earthquake vibrations or fail to detect real events if the sensitivity is not accurately calibrated, leading to user distrust or desensitization to alerts.
