Shortwave

Email has become the digital equivalent of a cluttered attic: useful, essential, and endlessly overwhelming. Between newsletters you never subscribed to, threads that spiral into confusion, and the constant ping of unimportant notifications, managing an inbox can feel like a full-time job. Shortwave — AI Email steps into this chaos with a bold promise: not just to organize your email, but to rethink how you interact with it entirely. Powered by artificial intelligence, this app positions itself as a smarter, faster, and surprisingly human alternative to traditional email clients. But does it deliver on that promise? After spending time with Shortwave, the answer is a qualified but enthusiastic yes — provided you are willing to embrace a new way of thinking about your inbox.

A Fresh Take on the Inbox

Shortwave does not simply slap a new coat of paint on the standard email interface. Instead, it reimagines the inbox as a dynamic workspace. Upon opening the app, you are greeted with a clean, modern design that feels more like a productivity tool than a traditional email client. Emails are grouped into bundles — similar to Google's tabbed inbox but far more intelligent. The AI automatically categorizes messages into newsletters, receipts, social notifications, and urgent items, learning from your behavior over time. This means the important stuff rises to the top while the noise fades into the background. It is a small change that makes a surprisingly large difference in daily email life.

AI That Actually Helps

The core selling point of Shortwave is its AI layer, and here it genuinely shines. The app uses advanced language models to summarize long email threads, draft replies, and even schedule meetings directly from a message. Imagine receiving a dense, multi-paragraph email from a colleague and, instead of reading every word, seeing a concise two-sentence summary at the top. That is exactly what Shortwave offers. The AI-generated replies are also impressively natural, adjusting tone based on context — professional for work contacts, casual for friends. You can edit them before sending, of course, but the drafts often require minimal tweaking. For anyone drowning in correspondence, this feature alone justifies the download.

Search and Organization Done Right

Traditional email search is notoriously bad. You type a keyword, and you get a thousand results with no clear priority. Shortwave changes that with a natural language search bar. You can type queries like "emails from Sarah about the budget last month" and get precisely what you need. The app also supports powerful filtering and custom views, allowing you to create a personalized workflow. For example, you can set up a view that shows only unread messages from your team, or another that displays all invoices awaiting payment. These are not just filters; they are tailor-made dashboards for your email life. The learning curve is gentle, and the payoff is substantial.

Collaboration and Integrations

Shortwave is built with teams in mind. You can share email threads with colleagues, assign messages as tasks, and comment internally — all without leaving the app. This turns email from a solo chore into a collaborative effort. The app also integrates smoothly with Google Workspace, Slack, and other popular tools, so it fits neatly into existing workflows. While it works perfectly well for individual users, the collaborative features are where Shortwave truly differentiates itself from competitors like Superhuman or Spark. If you work in a team that lives and dies by email, this app could be a game-changer.

Where It Falls Short

No app is perfect, and Shortwave has its rough edges. The AI, while impressive, occasionally misfires — summarizing an email in a way that misses nuance or drafting a reply that sounds slightly off. These moments are rare but noticeable. The app is also primarily designed for Gmail and Google Workspace accounts; if you rely on Outlook or another provider, you are out of luck for now. Finally, the pricing may give some users pause. While there is a free tier, the most powerful AI features are locked behind a subscription that costs around $9 per month. For heavy email users, it is worth it, but casual users may hesitate.

Final Verdict

Shortwave — AI Email is not just another email client; it is a genuine attempt to fix what is broken about digital communication. By combining intelligent categorization, AI-powered summaries and replies, powerful search, and team collaboration, it offers a compelling alternative to the status quo. It is not without flaws — the AI is not infallible, and the Gmail-only limitation is real — but for professionals and teams who live in their inbox, the productivity gains are hard to ignore. If you are tired of fighting your email and ready to let AI do the heavy lifting, Shortwave deserves a spot on your home screen. It may not solve email entirely, but it comes closer than anything else on the market today.
