Pros
Plex lets you organize and stream your personal movies, TV shows, photos, and music from a central media server. It automatically pulls metadata, artwork, and subtitles for clean library presentation, and on-the-fly transcoding ensures smooth playback on any device—making home media accessible everywhere without complex setup.
Plex provides a large, free ad-supported catalog of movies and TV shows alongside live TV, news, podcasts, and web shows—all in one app. You can stream on-demand content instantly, add an antenna and tuner for live TV and DVR recording, or upgrade to Plex Pass for premium extras and enhanced playback options.
Plex supports virtually every platform—smart TVs, streaming players, phones, tablets, and web browsers—so you can stream movies and TV seamlessly across devices. Robust remote access, user profiles, parental controls, and Plex Pass perks like mobile sync, hardware transcoding, and advanced music features make it ideal for both casual viewers and power users.
Cons
Setting up Plex often requires a separate Plex Media Server on a PC or NAS, which can be technical for casual users. Remote streaming demands good upload bandwidth and a powerful CPU for real-time transcoding; without that, video quality suffers or buffering increases, making setup and performance a barrier for many.
Many of Plex’s most useful features are locked behind Plex Pass. Live TV DVR, mobile sync, offline downloads and advanced metadata tools require a subscription, while free users face ads in the ad-supported catalog and limited mobile playback features, reducing value compared with full-featured paid streaming services.
Plex's content depends heavily on what you own or its modest ad-supported library, so selection can’t match major streaming services. Metadata scraping sometimes mismatches titles, and discovery/recommendation tools are less polished, making it harder to find high-quality or newly released content without manual organization, and regional licensing of Plex's on-demand catalog further limits availability.
