NHS Food Scanner

As part of the British government’s Better Health campaign, NHS Food Scanner is a food scanner app that brings food labels to life and helps users make healthier food and drink choices.

A quick scan of the barcode on the product's packaging using the phone's camera will show users the amount of sugar, saturated fat and salt in the food item. The app also enables families to make healthier food choices by offering alternatives with less saturated fat, sugar or salt after they scan the barcode of selected shopping items. Users are able to compare different products based on their nutritional content and use the swap suggestions to find healthier choices.

Features:

• Scan barcodes: Scan product barcodes on food items to get its nutritional information.
• Swap suggestions: Offer alternatives with less saturated fat, sugar or salt.
• Living labels: A fun augmented reality feature that brings to life what’s inside your food and drink right in front of your eyes.
• Traffic light ratings: See at a glance whether the product is high, medium or low in sugar, salt and fat.
• Good Choice badge: Highlight foods that are in line with the government’s current dietary recommendations for added sugar, saturated fat and salt.
• Scan History: See the full list of every product you've ever scanned.

Where does the nutrient data come from?

The nutrient data in this app is supplied by Brand Bank and Food Switch. Actually, the app is based on the most widespread data available to the public. The development team is continuously working to improve the app and adding more and more product information.
