OfferUp

Pros

OfferUp makes buying and selling fast and simple with an intuitive mobile-first interface. Listing items takes seconds—add photos, descriptions, and price—while powerful search filters and categories help buyers find relevant listings. Built-in messaging, saved searches and alerts streamline transactions for both local pickup and nationwide shipping.

Trust and safety are central to OfferUp’s marketplace. Verified profiles, buyer and seller ratings, and the TruYou identity check reduce risk and build accountability. In-app messaging, secure payment options and community reporting tools further protect users, helping you shop or sell with greater confidence whether locally or when shipping items.

OfferUp helps you reach millions of buyers without complicated fees or auctions. Free basic listings and affordable paid boosts increase visibility, while built-in shipping and payment processing let sellers expand beyond local markets. The platform’s large user base and promotional tools make it easy to sell faster and maximize returns.

Cons

OfferUp’s peer-to-peer model can leave buyers and sellers exposed to scams and unsafe in-person transactions, without strong platform protection. Despite verification tools, fraudulent listings, bait-and-switch offers, and aggressive haggling occur. Users must vet profiles carefully, use secure payment options, and choose public meeting spots to reduce risk.

Buyer and seller protections are limited compared with larger marketplaces. Refunds and returns aren’t guaranteed, dispute resolution can be slow, and shipping claims may be denied without clear documentation, especially for inexperienced users who expect Amazon- or eBay-style protections. This uncertainty discourages higher-value purchases and complicates fraud recovery.

Search quality and inventory vary widely by location; many areas have sparse listings. Spam, duplicate ads, and low-quality photos make browsing frustrating. Sellers also face service and shipping fees for promoted listings, which cut into profits and limit price competitiveness, and many users report inconsistent customer support response times when problems arise.
