Nest

Pros

The Nest app delivers measurable energy savings by pairing with the Nest Learning Thermostat to automatically adjust temperatures based on your schedule and preferences. Built-in scheduling, home/away detection and energy usage reports help reduce HVAC runtime and monthly bills while keeping your home comfortable and easy to manage.

The Nest app centralizes smart home control, letting you manage thermostats, cameras, doorbells and smoke alarms from one intuitive interface. Seamless integration with Google Assistant and automation routines enables remote control, voice commands and personalized schedules, making setup simple and everyday smart-home management fast and reliable.

Nest enhances home security with Nest Cam and Nest Hello, offering 24/7 video streaming, intelligent motion alerts and two-way audio so you can monitor activity in real time. Custom activity zones, cloud video history and encrypted connections provide reliable notifications and privacy-focused controls for peace of mind.

Cons

Nest requires a Google account and stores camera, audio, and usage data in the cloud, raising privacy concerns. Users have limited visibility into how footage and metadata are processed or shared, and reliance on cloud services increases exposure to data breaches, government requests, and unclear data-retention policies.

Many of Nest’s advanced features—familiar face detection, extended video history, and event clips—require a Nest Aware subscription. Monthly or annual fees can quickly add up across multiple cameras, making the overall cost high. Essential capabilities are often locked behind paywalls, limiting value for budget-conscious users.

The Nest app depends heavily on cloud connectivity and offers limited local control or open APIs for power users. Compatibility with non-Google smart home devices can be inconsistent, and some legacy Nest products lose functionality over time. Users also report occasional app glitches, delayed notifications, and confusing interface changes.
